Principal Charity Classic

By Jim Milam

This past Sunday I attended the Principal Charity Classic Champions Golf Tour at the Glen Oaks Golf Course in Des Moines, Iowa.

This Senior Champions Tour Event was sponsored by Principal Financial Group. Each year this event raises thousands of dollars for the charities in Iowa.

I had the distinct honor to be an Honorary Observer and was chosen to walk inside the ropes with the final group on Sunday which consisted of Nick Price, Joey Sindelar and Mark Weibe. I must say this was very exciting to me and I was very impressed with these players, not only their abilities on the course but their attitude toward the spectators and their willingness to interact with people such as me.

Professional golfers are sometimes given a bad rap for their attitudes and their reactions to fans with cameras and cell phones. But now I understand how annoying these devices can be as I experienced it up close and personal. For those people who shout, "You Da Man" or "Go in The Hole" on every shot and snap pictures and text people on your cell phones, just remember these professionals are playing to make money for charities, entertain us and make a living for themselves and their families.

I gained a lot of respect for these professionals as they just took these situations in-stride and played their game ignoring the very few spectators who are rude and obnoxious.
